India defeated England in the first T20I at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, with a dominant seven-wicket win. Chasing 133, India’s Abhishek Sharma smashes an explosive inning of 79 off just 34 balls, including a 20-ball fifty. Sanju Samson’s explosive start (22 runs in one over) put the hosts in command, leaving England’s bowlers helpless despite Jofra Archer’s efforts.
Earlier, England struggled against India’s bowling attack, managing only to score 132 runs on the scoreboard. England's Captain Jos Buttler (68 off 44 balls) played an explosive inning for his side and stood alone throughout the first inning, while good spells by Indian bowling lineup Varun Chakravarthy (3/23) and Arshdeep Singh (2/14) dismantled England’s lineup. Besides Buttler, only Harry Brook (17) reached double digits as Suryakumar Yadav’s strategic field placements disrupted England’s rhythm.
India’s decision to rest Mohammed Shami confused fans, but the bowlers delivered a comprehensive performance and the results fell in the Indian side. Arshdeep became India’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is, while Chakravarthy’s breakthroughs in between the innings ensured England couldn’t accelerate further in their batting innings. Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel also contributed and took two wickets each.
India chased the target with ease, with Abhishek Sharma’s aggressive batting leading the charge. His mindblowing knock overshadowed the bowling attack of the England team, as India chased down the target in just 12.5 overs and clinched the win over England with having 43 balls in spare.
This highly dominating victory gives India a lead of 1-0 in the five-match series, India showcases their all-round dominance in both their departments and sets the tone for the upcoming games in the series.
